Button Time

I did end up finishing my Cascade last week, but was waiting to block it before I took pictures to share.  Now, a week later, Cascade is still unblocked, so the best I can do is this:

Besides blocking, I still need to decide on some buttons.  So, I hit the ever-intimidating button jars:

I was thinking I could go with my old classic: vintage brown leather buttons:

But then I found enough of these pretty brown buttons.  I was having a hard time getting a good picture, but they remind of an old clay pot- pottery class style:

Here's a closer look, the reflection was giving me issues in every shot:

I could go matchy-matchy:

 Add a little contrast:

Or a lot of contrast:

So before I took on the task of sewing on buttons, I decided I would come here to seek opinions- I know my readers never steer me wrong!

I'm also thinking of doing a hat and somehow incorperating the same leaf pattern- any suggestions there?

And for those of you wondering about the yarn- nope, it's not Madelinetosh, its Kona Superwash DK from Woven Art in East Lansing.  This yarn shop is one of my favorite places to buy hand dyed yarn.  The colorways and selection are impressive, the prices can't be beat.  I love that it is (kind of) local to me, but for those of you who live far away, you can still request colorways and order online, just follow the link above!

  1. I LOVE the yellow!!! Purple and yellow just go together sooo well, gives the darker purple a POP of spring yellow ;)

  2. Definitely option #2! Daintier than the first buttons, but more character than colored plastic buttons that follow.

  3. LOVE the brown buttons w/ the gold circle, and also love the yellow! It's a beautiful sweater, you did a lovely job!! :)

  4. I would say the leather or the clay buttons. The darker color looks great--classic. Cute sweater, as always!

  5. I'm more of the purple, I wouldn't want to take away from the beautiful decorative edge.

  6. I love the leather buttons! I second Amy in that plastic buttons don't quite match the chic style of the cardigan.

  7. I love the purple buttons. The leather ones seem too heavy for the look of the sweater. The purple ones don't take away from the beauty of the knitting.

  8. I love the "lot of contrast"--go with the yellow!! I love this pattern, and your yarn choice is just perfect.

  9. Yellow would be my first choice. The vintage leather buttons are my 2nd. Either way, it's going to be SO cute!

  10. 3,2,1,5,4

Any of the first three work for me, but the last two stand out too much in my humble opinion.

Can't wait to see what you pick.

  11. 1. yellow
    2. purple/ blue
...because darker ones make it look like my granny's cardigans :)

  12. I like the brown ones with the gold circle. Really cute!

  13. I like the clay-pot ones. (Looks like we've all got different ideas!)

  14. i say the clay buttons or the super-contrasty yellow! i love both those options. :)

  15. my vote is for the pretty brown buttons - they're precious!

  16. I like the clay pot buttons.

Hat: knit a headband of the leaf edging, pick up stitches from behind the headband, a couple-few away from the humped edge, knit a beanie in the round from there. The humped edge of the leaves would be pointed up, the even edge would be the bottom of the hat.

  17. I like both of the first two because they look like little berries.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I really like the second ones. Or the matchy matchy ones. Either way, this is going to be so cute!

  19. My vote would be for either of the brown buttons. I’m too indecisive to choose. 3rd place for me would be the yellow. So pretty!

  20. My favorites are the leather ones and the ones with a lot of contrast, though I like the clay pot ones too...

  21. I like the pink ones. it's such a classy little sweater--keep the monochromatic look!

For the hat--could you do a short-rowed hat knitted sideways with the leaves forming the brim? Or maybe a bottom-up hat knitted flat with the leaves as a 3D element?

  22. I love the yellow and the brown leather ones... so hard to choose!!!

  23. I vote for yellow, super cute!

    ReplyDelete
  24. My vote is for the yellow too - fun contrast to the 'classic' design.

    ReplyDelete
  25. As many have said... I vote matchy, matchy. Only because the knitting detail is so pretty - I think that's what should stand out.

  26. I would be tempted to attach something behind the leaf band and not have buttons maybe hooks? I think they distract from the beauty of the knitting and the pretty yarn. Could you use clear buttons?
Also does a button actually go on the ribbed bottom or would you just have a button on the stem of each leaf?
I think a hat with a few of the leaves going up 1 side would look cute and vintage, mimics the sweater but would only do 1 or 2.

  27. Classic leather or fun yellow.

  28. Like the "clay-pot" brown buttons. Yarn is great for this pattern! Lovely

  29. I am NOt a yellow person but i love the yellow with it. Or the purple so the edges show.

  30. Another vote for yellow -- but I would give green a try, as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really like the yellow contrast! Very fun:)

  32. if your thinking spring i vote for 'lots of contrast'...if you're thinking traditional/classical i vote for the leather vintage buttons. good luck on choosing!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would go matchy-matchy - those buttons really make the knitting design of the button band pop.

    ReplyDelete
  34. a lot of contrast - love the lime green & purple

    ReplyDelete
  35. I vote for #2, love the pseudo-vintage look (okay so I'm all about vintage with a twist).

    ReplyDelete
  36. i like the clay pot ones, or the purple to blend in and to not distract from the beauty of the sweater. i can also picture a dark purple "blackberry" button as an option. whatever you choose, the sweater is gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the pretty brown clay-ish ones. Great little sweater!

  39. i like the leather or the yellow

  40. I'd keep it bright & girlie with the yellow buttons.

  42. Oh dear, you have been given votes for each of the buttons! I like the purple or the aqua :-) Thanks for the links for yarn, I am always looking for good yarns. I really like this knit. Plus, I just love the photo of your button collection. Such a nice way to keep buttons, in preserving jars and on display like an installation!! Love love love it. xxx Fi

  43. I like the shiny ones...and I have to say I am jealous of your collection of buttons.
As for a hat I am currently knitting the Swirl hat by Sheepy Time for my niece, and I think they would work well together. Or maybe modify it in such a way as to use the leaf detail....

  44. I always like matchy matchy, but think the yellow ones are kinda catchy!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I loved the "little contrast", the blue buttons added a nice amount of pop!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like the shiny brown buttons that were given you photographic issues. Just not a big fan of plain old 4-hole flat buttons on such a beautiful sweater, even though the color contrasts are nice. Too bad there is not a "flashier" shank button in the yellow or blue.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've got to throw my vote in for the leather ones... although the yellow look great too!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I vote for #2 or #1. Such a pretty sweater!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I like the yellow. I think it adds that pop of color that accentuates the falling leaves. The blue is also nice, but seemed a bit simple, and the purple on purple didn't seem at all interesting. As for the first two choices, I like the buttons in the first option. I think they offer a dark contrast to the yarn with a little visual interest that compliments the stitches. The second set - the brown ones - I think have too much going on and detract from the simplicity of the leaf design.

  50. I prefer the brown leather (#1) or the pretty brown buttons (#2), IMHO! The sweater is a beauty!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I like the yellow ones and the faux leather buttons aswell :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. The pretty brown ones, definitely :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I really dislike the yellow (to me, it cheapens the sweater). My preference is the purple or either of the first two if you want contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My vote is for the clay pot buttons. And if you felt like we didn't get a good picture of them, I bet they look even better in person.

Yellow would be my 2nd choice.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think one of the first two options are my favorite. Very classic.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love option #2, the clay-potttery style buttons!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I like the brown leather but my Katie-bug would love the blue ones!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I say the shiny brown buttons. Adorable sweater!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Old Classic Vintage...so what'd you decide?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I prefer the leather or clay pot buttons because they're simply classier buttons. The colors do add pop but the two hole flat colored buttons are bit blah to draw that much attention to themselves. So if buttons aren't the focal point, then matchy matchy.
