Welcome to Fiber Space

Believe it or not, things have finally been moving along on the basement renovations (I know, we've been taking our pretty little time).  I'm getting to a final reveal point, but you'll have to wait just a little longer.  After my baby shower, we didn't clear out all the tables and chairs; they are sticking around until the end of October after the next baby shower. So, a reveal of a newly finished basement with seating for over 50 just doesn't seem right- so it will have to wait.

There is fortunately one corner of the basement set up that I have somehow been able to keep free of baby shower debris- and today is the day for a sneak peek!

That's right, I believe it is time for a stash-sharing photo!  I know, I know- I haven't even been blogging for a year yet, maybe it's too soon- maybe I'm moving too quickly in this online relationship, but sometimes its just hard to hold back.

In this smaller cabinet (again, thanks IKEA... another great Expedit), you will find my plant fibers- cottons, bamboo, corn.  Although cotton is not my favorite to work with, it does make a nice baby gift fiber.

And in the larger cabinet, you will find my knitting books/magazines and animal fiber.  I would like to say that this contains all of my wool, alpaca, bison, cashmere, etc- but that would be a lie.  There is also a whole closet filled with Paton's Classic Wool.  I got a ton on sale last year when we were actually manufacturing slippers.

Now I realize that I will never be able to knit through all of this, but one of the plans with the knitting studio basement is to teach knitting classes.  I suppose price of yarn will be included in the price of the class and I will have a good supply for a while!

And yes, you have probably guessed by now, but this is another IKEA Expedit bookshelf- perfect for housing yarn and books, a new knitting essential (In my opinion!).

It may be hard to tell from the pictures, but the wall colors in this area are a soft gray.  Anything I'm leaving out? I am looking around at different posters/charts/frames for this area as well- suggestions?

  6. Beautiful. And jealous! My Expedit houses only ends of balls of yarn, in a drawer. (Well, and my little one's toys. But the only yarn is in a drawer.)

  7. It looks lovely! I have a question about storing your animal fibers in the open: How do you deter moths? I love how yarn looks but all of mine is packed in plastic bins to keep it safe!

  9. This is SO gorgeous! I've been meaning to move my stash into a much larger space for over a year! Thanks for the inspiration!

Question: Do you do anything to protect your wool from moths? That's been my big creative issue in stash organization.

    Thanks!

  10. You have done a lovely job! The shelves are perfect, they give your stash a clean, organized feel so you can instantly see the colors you have and the fiber type. I am dying to do the same thing, but I would have to build an addition to our house to pull it off. Or one of my family members could enable me by moving away so I can steal their room to organize my stash...

Still, I recently underwent a Stash Organization Frenzy, using my tiny non-walk-in closet. What can I say, you inspired me. I got a tiny shelving unit--one column of shelves--and built it into my closet. The stash still doesn't fit, but at least now, if you take out all of my clothes, it looks MUCH better, and now I can reach in and grab sweater yarn or sock yarn without all that digging!

  11. Beautiful space! In the midst of doing some basement re-org ourselves (and dreaming about making it more "finished" - the windows had to take precedence this year)
I LOVE the IKEA Expedit shelves - I have a set in my living room, and would dearly love to replace all my bookcases/shelving with Expedit someday.

  12. OH, MY! Gorgeous! I'm insanely jealous of your incredible space! I'm anxious for the day when I have enough room for one of my own!

  13. Gosh, how nice! I really want to make my basement that nice. It leaks at the moment so it needs a lot of work. It would be nice to have a yarn studio and computer work station down there with a TV and toys to keep the boys busy. Ah something to aspire to.

Thank you for the sneak peak into your life.

  16. So, looking back through your archive, there are two images that would make awesome posters if you had them enlarged. Both are from December. The grid of yarns from "Colors of my Season" (sorry if that's not quite the title) and the grid of all the cool buttons from "Buttons!". Totally appropriate for "the space"!

BTW, I'm so jealous! We don't really have basements in California to make cool yarn studios!

  17. Love the space, the shelves AND the rug. I have passed by that one in the magazine and in the Canton IKEA plenty of times with a thought about what room it could go in. Now I am thinking I need a knitting studio in which to place that rug... and the shelves.... and all of my yarn... :)

  20. I am so jealous of your beautifully arranged Fibre Space, how I wish I had a corner that looked exactly like that in my home.

...can't wait to see the final reveal!

(I LOVE Expedit, surely the designer of this IKEA series is a knitter because these shelves were made to hold fibre!)

  23. A neat idea for wall art is a super up close photo of a garment section in stockinette stitch in black and white (of a lighter yarn) framed out in white.

  25. Madame is showing us her stash! How daring! Just kidding... It really looks nice and neat. I have new IKEA closet that I still have to fill. Isn't it fun? I love your area. Great idea to include yarn in your knitting classes! Awesome!

  26. Wow, this really put's my yarn 'collection'(if you can call it that) to shame! Love that rug from IKEA! I almost bought the same one, but it was a bit small for my space.

  27. Ikea's Expedit is in my craft room as well-- I love it!

  28. Stash envy! You have also made me realize I need to have my stash in plain view - although that may make it harder to justify my purchases! The soft gray paint is calming and I may need to consider that in the future when (or should I say if?) we ever get that far on our basement. Unfortunately there is almost no natural light down there, so I'm not sure I would like it as my craft room.

  29. the Expedit has out fitted my classroom quite simply as well as my teenage girls room. They love the cubbies! I think it goes back to preschool.

As for wall hangings/posters. What about one of those great plays on the Keep Calm series - Keep Calm and knit or Keep Calm and Make something. They are all over Etsy.
