Up North

For Michiganders, many summer weekends (and extended weekends) are spent 'up north'.  It's hard to describe the beauty and charm of 'up north', but it's always fun to expose newcomers to the experience.

We started the end of last week up at Mackinac Island.  My first visit to Mackinac was for our first anniversary. There are no motor vehicles on the island, so travel is simply by horse drawn carriages and bicycles.

Now that we have visited a few times, one night on the island is enough to kick off a nice up north vacation (as long as we make sure to stop at Marc's Double Oven for morning pastries!).

The rest of our vacation was spent in Petoskey...

With old friends

And new ones, too!

Boating, swimming, and just general relaxing time ruled, and we took advantage of it.

And as far as knitting goes, there was time for that, too!

I was able to stop in the LYS (Cynthia's Too!) and spotted these little guys on display.

And much of my downtime was spent knitting this little number:

I'm hoping to have an FO by the end of this weekend- I'll keep you posted!

  1. One of my most favorite memories is when my family took a vaca (back in the 70s) and travelled from home in Ohio to visit relatives 'Up North'. We also went to Mackinac Island, and the relatives lived in Petoskey! Lovely lovely area! Looks like a wonderful time! and can't wait to see the FO!

  2. How sweet! It reminds me of the time we took a vacation to Kelley's Island on Lake Erie (just off Cleveland). I think I was about 12, we toured the glacial grooves and had to ride bikes everywhere. The place we stayed in was like a room full of twin beds, pretty funny to me at the time.

Now that I think about it, my friend Leslie goes to Mackinac Island every summer, too...

The baby sweater looks SUPER cute and looks like it would keep a MI baby very warm. Nice call.

  3. That Sublime pattern is one of my all-time favourites. I knit the coat for my grandson in Trekking 6 fach; it will be perfect this winter. I have made the hat for him three times in a variety of sizes and yarns. It looks so cute on! Look forward to seeing your take on the pattern.

  4. Oh, I remember a family trip when I was in 6th grade when we went from Ohio up to Mackinac and on in to Canada and around to Niagara Falls....But my most vivid memory is from Mackinac!

Can't wait to see the FO...that jacket is adorable!

  6. I've only been to Mackinac Island twice, but I loved it both times. I could really use a weekend like that. It must feel great for you, too!
