A little early Valentine's gift for one of my Valentines:
And although she is quite silly these days (we often find her laughing out loud, looking for a reaction when she throws something over her head to 'hide' or has 'accidentally' lodged her finger in a piece of food. Yes, this house is filled with an abundance of giggles these days), she is not the funny Valentine I am talking about. The real goofiness is found in the yarn for this hat.
It was my first time working with Malabrigo Twist, and just like Malabrigo Worsted, it is soft to the touch- a gift for a knitter's fingers (with the added bonus of a little more consistency). Not sounding funny yet? This part came when I was done with the knitting- blocking time. You see, here is a picture of the leftover yarn used for this hat:
Looks a little different from the pictures above, huh? When I got the hat wet my red started to bleed quite a bit. At first I tried to scrub it out, but it was too hard where the colors met. Then I decided- I do have a little girl- she can handle a pink and red Valentine's Day hat. So, into a bucket of warm water went said hat. I quite like the pink and red combo, I'm happy with the results, and glad I got to learn my mixing color lesson this way.
In other news, today is a big day for me. Today is the first day of the last week of my 20s. How did that happen so quickly? I remember when Joe turned 30, back in 2007- he told me I would be there in no time. In the moment I laughed, now I see how fast it really does happen.
Now, I have to figure out how to make this last week epic. It's been quite a decade- any suggestions?

She looks adorable! I never thought that the colors wold bleed that much, but the pink turned out wonderful, and so even as well!

ReplyDeleteWow! That is one pink hat, I can't believe the dye ran so much and so evenly, it looks completely intentional. But it looks fantastic, yay for embracing happy accidents!
ReplyDeleteI have had some interesting bleeding happen before (on a baby blanket slated to be gifted in two days) and I actually did an overdye on the whole blanket. Luckily it was shades of blue with brown (the culprit) and white (the victim), so I lightly dyed the whole thing blue, fixing the white sections.
ReplyDeleteVinegar in the soak takes care of bleeding, by the way. I use a lot of hand dyeds in my colorwork, and they tend to do some amazing amounts of bleeding. The vinegar makes the dye stay put! (and also softens wool sometimes. It's a great trick!)
As for turning thirty, I have no suggestions for you as I have five years to go.
Oh thank you! I checked the comments hoping there'd be advice on how to prevent bleeding like that. I have a future project in a lovely cranberry-red and white and really don't want the red to bleed.

You should check it with your swatch, just to be sure! Red is super tricky.

ReplyDeleteA pedicure?, a massage?, a dinner in front of a fireplace?, buy yourself some earrings or other jewelry that you like as a memento. Sing out loud! Reflect on the past few years. Go salsa dancing, get a puppy (lol)? Get yourself some flowers. (Can you take some time off from your work?)Start a new tradition of taking your birthday off if you don't already.

ReplyDeleteThat's some crazy color bleeding - pretty great how the white picked it up so consistently, though.
I love the pink! Especially with the red! Fabulous mistake! :). As for your turning 30, never look back! You only get better with age! I am 44 now and it's just fine! Enjoy!

She is too cute. If you hadn't mentioned that the original color was white noone would have known it wasn't planned that way. For me my 30s have been way better than my 20s. I feel like I really came into my own.
