Craft Room Inspiration

There are many events in a girl's life that she dreams about for many years. Falling in love, her wedding day, buying her first home, starting a family. For me (and I assume many of my loyal readers), designing an ideal craft room has always topped the list.

I admit, in the past decade many a'pages were dog-eared and torn out of my personal collection of Martha Stewart Living and Better Homes and Gardens magazines. There are folders on my computer marked 'decorating ideas' that seem to only grow with time.

I don't know if its the soft colors or pristine organization that draws me in. Either way, it's always been a dream of mine to have a full-fledged craft studio and yesterday, my dream started to become a reality.

We will be starting to frame out our basement on Monday, and an 11' x 15' space will be completely dedicated to knitting. Granted, we will be working within a budget, but I've started looking for inspiration on the web. Get ready for a picture overload... these are just a few of rooms I love:

  1. I love the white cabinets with glass fronts (3rd picture). I share your dream.

  2. My only suggestion to all of these craft rooms is the vital need for a comfortable chair. Something you can recline in and knit for hours :)

  3. Yay, that is so exciting! I've always found Heather Bailey's studio to be particularly amazing - http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/heather_bailey/2007/02/the_studio.html.

  5. Jealous!!!
I know open shelving and glass-fronted cabinets are all the rage, but I'd suggest having at least some closed storage...you know...in case you have a mess to hide :) I do love the way the semi-transparent glass shows the colors but not the detials of what's inside...perfect for yarn stored in ziplocks, for example!

  7. There is a Martha issue dedicated to her craft room. I find the photos so inspiring. We have a room in our basement perfect for a studio but it is low on the priority list right now. For the time being, I can live vicariously through yours!

  8. These are beauuuutiful...I envy you your (future) craft room! I'll have to see if I can make this dream become a reality for me. :)

  9. All of the rooms are white or mostly white, which allows one to see color properly, like that. I wonder, though, where they are hiding the yarn? My living room has a wall of shelves and two truck-tool-bins holding my yarn. I go into that yarn every day. Need it all. Good that Brian finds the shelves satisfactory in public space.

Also, a kitchen island might work well as a center "table" in the room. Are you planning on having a felting machine or running water?

  11. I love the first pic--the yellow and white. It's so fresh, inviting and inspiring. You'll definitely need a few comfy chairs (I'm coming over to knit with you!! lol). A giant corkboard would be good too. I'm jealous Melynda! You deserve your dream craft room though. :)

  12. Oh how exciting! I was so lucky. When we got married my husband already owned an adorable little 3 bedroom ranch. Well it's just the two of us... and you guessed it... one of those rooms became my "me" room. I adore it... it already had purple walls, which looked amazing with all my parisian artwork... add a papasan and a few work tables... *sigh*

  13. Ooo lala, I'm so inspired! Will you be adding a comfy chair? I love the PB room, but I don't think I'd like to sit up that high. But throw in a bi chair and a half...I'm there!

These have been a god-send for me - I bought the suspension rail and then the pots hang from the rail. Perfect for DPNs, pencils and scissors/swatches to hang from!

  16. Well, this is timely! I've been pondering this same conundrum. Only, I have about 6 square feet to fit all my crap in, so it's not quite as exciting.

However, here is MY dream studio:

(she even gives pointers on how to design your own studio - Martha M, I love you)

And, if you come across something that you like, but can't afford, I may be convinced to help you draft something up (in exchange for a pair of felted slippers, perhaps?). I am an interior designer and a McGyver-er, after all. I've got a KILLER pattern for making a low-slung bookcase out of exactly one sheet of plywood...

  19. I would design around the most comfortable knitting chair you can find. Then I would spend whatever it takes to get the lighting exactly the way you like it. I am a big fan of natural light but UV rays fade fabric and yarns. Consider installing the expensive full-spectrum light bulbs. They are good for Seasonal Affective Disorder, too. The rest will come when it comes. As you settle into the room you will know where you want cabinets and a counter and where you want open storage like bookshelves. Just remember, anything open has to be dusted and is open to fading. Don't forget to put a lot of outlets around, that HAS to be done before the walls are finished.

  20. We are moving and I'm in the same process as well! I like Donna Downey's new studio and her use of IKEA pieces to organize.

  21. I just came across your blog looking for inspiration pictures for my own knitting room! I have decided to convert our seldom-used guest room into my own work room, at my darling husband's suggestion. :) I spent today emptying drawers and bagging up stuff for the charity that will be coming Monday to haul away the bed. I have some chests of drawers and a work table that will be getting a fresh coat of paint, and I plan on buying an Expedit bookcase from Ikea (those big, square, cubby ones)for open yarn storage. I have a few other ideas, too, but it's not the sort of thing you can put together overnight, is it?

I am planning on going with Expedit bookcases, too! Stay tuned... I will be posting more very soon (today we were priming the space, flooring will hopefully go in in the next week or so)

  24. Very neat indeed. And yes, I get the feeling that a white wall is perfect for a craft room.

  28. I so know the feeling of looking at these pictures and feeling such envy :) they are so lovely. I'm just starting a project to turn a little shed into a craft room if you want to check it out on: http://gildedgrandiosity.blogspot.com/
It's tiny but will be all mine :)
